FIRE-TROL® 931

FIRE-TROL® 931 is a long-term retardant currently in use at many air attack bases in Canada, Chile, France and other nations. This retardant provides fire-inhibiting salt in a concentrated liquid form.

Ease of handling is important in any fire retardant system. Since FIRE-TROL® 931 is "all liquid", there are no powders to handle or store. The liquid concentrate is blended with water as it is pumped into the airtanker, and premixing and storage of mixed retardants are not required. FIRE-TROL® 931 is excellent for use at either high demand bases, or at re-load bases where mixing and loading operations can be performed by one person.

The viscosity of the mixed retardant may be adjusted by adding a liquid guar gum.

PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS

DESCRIPTION

FIRE-TROL® 931 is a liquid concentrate consisting of:

  • ammonium polyphosphate
  • attapulgite clay thickener
  • corrosion inhibitor
  • colouring agent

It is stored as a concentrate and diluted with water to form a low viscosity slurry for application from fixed-wing aircraft or helicopter buckets.

PROPERTIES

Mix Ratio: 4.0 to 5.5 parts water to 1 part concentrate, by volume

Yield: 3,579 to 4,635 litres of mixture/tonne of concentrate

Density: 1.06 to 1.08 kg/litre - mixed retardant

Viscosity: 50 + 15 cps (unthickened 50 - 1,500 cps (gum thickened as desired)

PACKAGING

Bulk or 205 litre drums.

MIXING

Fire-Trol Canada Company has developed mixing systems that allow the water and concentrated liquid retardant to be blended at the desired mix ratio. A compact proprietary blender is located between the storage tanks and loading pump. The retardant is mixed in proper proportions while being pumped through the loading system into the aircraft.

STORAGE

FIRE-TROL® 931 concentrate can be stored for extended periods with a minimum of separation. Periodic re-circulation is recommended. Bulk tank storage at air attack bases provides mixed retardant on demand, utilizing a minimum of personnel to mix and load the retardant into airtankers.

CORROSION

FIRE-TROL® 931 meets the USDA-Forest Service uniform corrosion requirements on aluminum, mild steel, and brass, as well as intergranular corrosion on aluminum.

EQUIPMENT

FIRE-TROL® 931 mixing and loading equipment is available from Fire-Trol Canada Company.
